The Bookworm International Literary Festival 2014 brings you a unique chance to see comedy star Dashan performing live at the Chengdu Bookworm.

A regular performer on Chinese television and on the CCTV New Year Gala, with four million followers on weibo and hundreds of millions of fans, bilingual Canadian comic Dashan is China’s best-known foreign celebrity. With supporting acts including Irish comedian Des Bishop, who arrived in China less than a year ago and is already performing and hosting Chinese comedy shows. In Chinese only, with audience Q&A after the show.

Dashan is the Chinese stage name of Canadian Mark Rowswell. Rowswell first appeared on Chinese television to host an international singing competition in November 1988 and the following month he performed a comedic skit for the CCTV New Year Gala, which propelled him to national stardom overnight because of his fluent Chinese and skilled delivery. Soon afterwards he began formal study of the Chinese comedic performance style known as Crosstalk. An actor, cultural ambassador and television host as well as comedian, Dashan is the most famous Western personality in China’s media industry, where he occupies a unique position as a foreign national who has become a bona fide domestic celebrity.

Des Bishop is an Irish-American comedian from New York, who has been based in Ireland since the late 1990s and in Beijing for the past year. He is well-known in Ireland for his TV appearances and sharp observational comedy. His TV show, In the Name of the Fada, which premiered in Ireland in 2008, deals with Bishop trying to learn Irish to a standard sufficient to perform an entire standup act in the language. He is now repeating the experience with Mandarin.
